Even as mainstream applications for LEDs continue to grow, some specialty uses like the OceanLED Amphibian line of shipboard lighting make full use of their unique advantages.  LEDs are compact in size, they are resistant to vibration and moisture, they require minimal maintenance, and heat output is greatly reduced – are of which are critical advantages that make LED lighting perfect for marine applications.

The Amphibian lights are designed to provide underwater illumination when mounted on the exterior of a ship’s hull.  External underwater lighting can increase safety by making a ship more visible (especially from the air), it attracts bait for fishing use, and it can provide ambiance and let passengers view the undersea environment.

Traditional underwater lighting systems have relied on bulb-based fixtures like xenon lights that require frequent maintenance – no small task when the bulb is underwater.  OceanLED conservatively projects a 40,000-hour life span for its lights, compared to roughly 3,000 hours for xenon.  That translates to nearly 14 years of all-night use for the LEDs.

OceanLED offers the Amphibian lights in white, blue, red, and green options for ideal lighting in different water conditions.  Glass lenses manufactured by Tritonium Optical Technologies provide optimal light clarity and range, and a unique anti-fouling coating on the lights reduces the growth of sealife.  And the Amphibian design also has another distinct advantage over traditional underwater lighting systems:  the LED lights can be used while the craft is in motion, thanks to the vibration-proof solid state construction and a thermal cutoff in the event of overheating.
