LED Safety Clothing – High-Tech Visibility In The Dark

Staying visible in the dark can be the key to nighttime safety for athletes, motorists, and workers. Passive reflectors have long been used in safety clothing, but now active lighting technology has arrived in the form of LEDs. Thanks to their small size, light weight, and minimal battery requirements, LEDs are being integrated into clothing items like these.

Endura Luminite Jacket

The Endura Luminite Jacket is a breathable, technical shell jacket with an integrated rear LED for visibility. It’s designed to withstand seriously sloppy weather (which can go hand in hand with poor visibility) and the Luminite features fully sealed seams, a storm flap on the zipper, and a waterproof media pocket on the chest. Reflective patches around the jacket supplement the red LED on the back, which provides 50 hours of flashing light.

Nathan LED Cyclist Vest

The Nathan LED Cyclist Vest is constructed of high-visibility yellow, breathable mesh. The flexible, removable LED strip on the rear of the vest is visible for up to a mile, and the replaceable battery provides illumination for up to 150 hours. The vest features an integrated loop to secure an additional LED strobe if needed, and 3M Scotchlite strips provide extra reflective visibility.

LEDwear LEDjacket

The LEDjacket from UK-based LEDwear is a ventilated jacket that can also be worn as a vest thanks to removable sleeves. Twenty LEDs (two white strips on the front of the jacket and two red strips on the rear) are mounted on reflective stripes to provide maximum visibility, and the lights can be set to shine steadily or flash for a strobe effect. Three AAA batteries are stored in a small pouch inside the jacket, and they provide approximately 100 hours of illumination.

Nite Ize LED Sport Vest

The Nite Ize LED Sport Vest is a lightweight and minimalist mesh vest that features front and rear LED lighting as well as reflective panels. Flexible red LED light strips illuminate the front and back of the vest, and horizontal white 3M Scotchlite reflectors add extra visibility. A pair of 3-volt watch batteries provides power for 150 hours, and the LEDs can be set to flash or emit a constant glow.
