UK-based Astucia Traffic Safety Systems has given common reflective lane markers a high-tech makeover: their solar-powered LED roadway indicators drastically improve roadway visibility and safety for drivers.

The Astucia SolarLite LED road markers give drivers added reaction time and help them anticipate the road ahead. Passive marker systems like reflectors rely on the straight-line beam of headlights, and they are limited by range and poor weather. In contrast, because the LEDs are constantly lit, a driver can see road curves in the distance, or maintain clear visibility in rainy or foggy conditions. The SolarLite indicators use either one or two ultra-bright LEDs, and are visible for up to 900 meters – a full 10 times farther than traditional reflectors.

The SolarLite LEDs require just four hours of bright daylight to produce 10 days of power from their internal rechargeable batteries, so they can continue to function even during prolonged periods of poor weather. Astucia offers a variety of LED markers in different colors that can be used to delineate traffic lanes, mark the edges of roadways, and even dynamically direct traffic flow based on congestion or weather conditions. Asticia also produces low-profile markers that are flush with the road surface, making them safe for motorcycles and keeping them safe from snowplow damage.
