Aircraft cabins on Virgin America, the California-based US domestic branch of the Virgin airline family, don’t look like the cabins on any other carriers’ planes. Their onboard LED lighting schemes are part of VA’s efforts to increase passenger comfort and relaxation while onboard.
LED lighting schemes on the Virgin America Airbus A320 aircraft were custom developed with German firm Diehl Luftfahrt Elektronik, and they are the first of their kind on any US airline. The mood lighting covers the entire aircraft, through first-class and coach sections of the cabin.

The color tones of the lighting were designed to be aesthetically pleasing and relaxing to passengers. The dynamic system allows the colors and brightness to gradually shift based on the time of day, including “daylight”, “dusk”, ”sleep”, and “dawn” modes. This transition may actually help travelers adjust to crossing time zones, especially on overnight flights. The personal reading lights are also LED fixtures that provide a clean, white light when the ambient cabin lighting is at a low level. Color tinted windows help complete the effect by reducing daytime glare and filtering harsh color tones.
