Aspire Tower Lit With LEDs

The Aspire Tower in Doha, Qatar is bathed in LED lighting that can be customized to celebrate any occasion and create a huge array of dynamic visual effects.

The Aspire Tower, the tallest building in the Arab emirate of Qatar, features an LED lighting system designed by the Scottish firm of Kevan Shaw Lighting Design.  The structure is located in the Sports City complex in Doha, and thus was designed with a lighting scheme that could be customized to celebrate various events.

Construction of the 1,050-foot skyscraper was completed in just 15 months.  3,800 individually controlled LED light fixtures are integrated with the mesh structure of the tower’s façade, allowing for a huge variety of lighting effects via specially developed ColourTramp software.  Some of the signature visual effects of the Aspire Tower project are strobe sparkles and a water-mist flame setting.

One unique design challenge facing KSLD was operating the LED system in the extreme heat of the desert environment.  Instead of a typical shut-off mechanism in the event of an overheated fixture, KSLD developed a system to partially reduce light output to a safe level, which protects the fixtures while maintaining the visual effect of the tower’s LED lighting.
